Prayer – Conversing with God

Many people think that prayer has to be this well-organized script that is submitted to God in a certain place and at a certain time of day, but I\’m here to tell you that is far from true. God wants to have a true relationship with us. He wants us to know him the same way he knows us. This means developing intimacy with him and building a true connection where you know his voice, therefore you know when he\’s talking back.

There are so many ways to talk to God and in this blog article I am going to spill out the many ways that we can converse with the LORD.

Position of Prayer

As a believer, we are in covenant (partnership) with God to bring about his will into the Earth. He has an assignment and mission for every person on this planet, this means that his spirit is operating inside of our vessel (body) giving us all sorts of ideas, strategies, answers and insight so that we can bring the Kingdom of Heaven into the Earth. God is the creator of all, he is all knowing and can see all things… He also has an end in mind, but needs our help bringing it to pass, however, we are limited to seeing only what is in front of us, therefore, we need him to reveal to us the things that we cannot see with natural eyesight so that we know what to do, when to do it and how.

Picture this: Imagine walking with a blindfold and someone telling you which way to go and giving you warnings about what\’s ahead of you so that you won\’t bump your head or stub your toe… this is our relationship with God. When we pray or talk to God, we need to pray with this in mind, so that we are praying from the proper position.

Types of Prayer

Prayer is like a toolbox, we need to know which tool to use, where to use it and when. In Ephesians 6:18, Paul talks about praying in all manner of prayer, in other words using all the different kinds of prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to pray without ceasing, talk to God continuously throughout your day.

Prayer of consecration

The term consecration means getting close to offer a request, in other words this prayer is aligning with and pledging yourself to God. This is the most common type of prayer in the Bible. God wants us to draw near to him and surrender ourselves to his will. The Bible references this type of prayer when Jesus fell on his face and prayed to God the night before his crucifixion in Matthew 26:39.

Prayer of Petition

The Bible says that God formed us before the foundation of the world. This means that when he placed us in the earth, he planted us here with gifts, talents and abilities that all aligned with his plan. It\’s our job to get those translated from our minds and into the earth by way of petition. The term petition is a written request. Have you heard of vision boarding or writing a vision statement? Essentially, this means getting your dream out on paper. The prayer of petition allows God to help critique your vision and give clarity to the image in order that he may help you bring it to pass. Philippians 4:6.

Prayer of Authority (Faith)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance (guarantee) about what we do not see. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us that if we ask anything in alignment with his will then he hears us and if we know he hears us, then we know we also have what we are asking for. The prayer of authority demands us to pray in faith knowing and expecting that what we are praying for is certainly coming to pass. In other words, we are commanding it to happen. John 15:7 says that if we abide (remain) in his word, and his words remain in us then when we ask, it will be done. This is extremely confident expectation.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

When we are praising and giving him thanks, we are actually practicing the prayer of thanksgiving. Often times you may find yourself just thanking God for simple things that have transpired or thanking him for salvation, this is operating in gratitude which is a form of prayer. The Bible says that God just wants to glory and to glorify God means to make known our appreciation out loud to him because he is worthy of praise for what he\’s done for us. He has redeemed us from the power of failure because he loved us, not because we\’ve done anything to deserve it, but just because he loved us. That alone is worth giving thanks. The Psalms are filled with prayers of thanksgiving, as David was a lover of God. (Psalm 138)

Prayer of Agreement

To agree is to be in harmony, one accord. The Bible says that when two or more touch and agree it will be done, Matthew 18:19. We are the body of Christ and when we harmonize on any issue, God moves. After Jesus ascension the disciples joined together constantly in prayer and in one accord, Acts 1:14. Later after Pentecost the early church devoted themselves to the letters of the apostles and communing with God, Acts 2:42.

Prayer of Intercession

Paul says in the Bible that praying in the spirit (tongues) helps our infirmities (troubles, challenges) especially when we aren\’t sure exactly what we should pray. Often times, the spirit will reveal to us what is necessary to pray or intercedes on behalf of others, Romans 8:26. Stepping in on behalf of others can also be powerful for what we are believing for because we are all knit together and unraveling one kink could undo a lot of other knots unbeknown to the flesh (that we cannot see in the natural), 1Timothy 2:1.

Prayer of Imprecation

This prayer allows you to bring the light into dark places (Isaiah 60:1-2) and bring the enemy (whether strife, anger, fear, etc) under judgment. The Bible tells us that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, Ephesians 6:12. When we see the curse operating in the earth, we have the authority to call judgement upon that illegal operation of those demons. Psalm 68.

Conclusion

It\’s important to know when to pray, what to pray and how to pray; this is how we will get the Kingdom of God here in the earth. There is so much going on in the world today and we need prayer more than ever before.
